Understanding the Subconscious Part 4: Why does this matter?

If you've read the last three blogs, you might be wondering... why does any of this actually matter?

If these subconscious patterns have quietly shaped our lives for years, why not just leave them there? Why bring them into the light at all?

For me, it isn't about fixing ourselves or endlessly analysing the past. It's about recognising that many of the beliefs, emotions and protective patterns we carry today have their roots in experiences that were never fully processed. Sometimes we simply didn't know how. Sometimes the emotions felt too overwhelming. Sometimes life just kept moving, and we learnt to push them aside so we could keep going.

Those emotions don't disappear just because time passes. They have a way of quietly following us into today, shaping how we see ourselves, other people and the situations we find ourselves in. Without even realising it, yesterday can begin colouring the way we experience today.

As I've continued processing my own emotions and allowing my beliefs to evolve over the last few years, the biggest changes haven't been dramatic moments where life suddenly became easier. They've been much quieter than that. Looking back, I can see they've gradually created more space inside me.

There's more space to breathe. More space to pause before reacting. More space to experience what's actually happening, rather than what my subconscious has already predicted is about to happen.

Life still brings challenges. People still disappoint me. Things don't always go to plan. The difference is that I find myself responding to those moments from a very different place.

Instead of asking, "What is this going to take away from me?" I find myself wondering, "What information is this experience bringing me?" That one shift has changed far more than I expected. Life has become less about protecting myself from what might happen and more about becoming curious about what is happening.

For a long time, I felt as though I needed to manage life. I was constantly trying to make the right decision, avoid getting hurt, keep everyone happy, or prevent things from going wrong. Looking back now, I can see how much energy it took to keep holding everything together.

These days, life feels much more like something I get to experience than something I have to constantly manage. I still make plans and care deeply about the people around me, but I don't feel the same need to tightly control every outcome. There is more space to breathe, more trust in myself, and more openness to let life unfold.

When we process our emotions and allow our beliefs to evolve so they align more closely with our desires, we naturally stop organising our lives around what we're trying to avoid. Instead, we begin living from what truly matters to us.

Along the way, we often discover that what we thought we wanted was only part of the story. Sometimes the things we chase are simply our best attempt at reaching something much deeper. As we become more honest with ourselves, we begin uncovering what we've really been longing for all along. For me, that has looked like discovering a deeper longing for peace, genuine connection, trust in myself and the freedom to enjoy the life I already have.

I wonder what sits beneath the things you're striving for.

For me, that's where the real change has happened. It isn't that the challenges have disappeared or that I've somehow become a different person. Instead, I find myself responding more to the life that's actually happening today, rather than to the version my subconscious learnt to expect years ago.

If there's one thing I hope you've taken away from this series, it's that you don't have to keep living today through yesterday's experiences.

Perhaps the greatest gift isn't changing who we are. It's finally giving ourselves the freedom to experience today as today.

Yesterday doesn't have to keep deciding how today feels.
